Archetypes in SoulCollage®: Meaning and Use
What are archetypes in SoulCollage®?
Seena Frost, the developer of SoulCollage®, describes archetypes in SoulCollage® as invisible guides, challengers, creators, and renewers known across all cultures. They bear many names and appear in various forms, but always refer to the same universal energies.
Within SoulCollage®, archetypes fall into the Committee Suite. These cards represent forces larger than the personal story, often carrying deep wisdom.
Archetypes as Universal Forces
The psychologist Carl Jung worked extensively with the concept of archetypes. He viewed archetypes as universal themes and images recognized by all people. According to Jung, they are part of the collective unconscious: a layer in the psyche that we share as humanity.
Archetypes are, as it were, patterns formed by human experiences throughout time. Just as instincts drive animals to certain behaviors, archetypes can evoke thoughts, feelings, and reactions in humans that we recognize, even if we don't consciously understand them.
Examples of archetypes
Examples of archetypes you might recognize include:
- the mother
- the warrior
- the jester
- the inner child
- the witch
- the shaman
- the hero
- gods and goddesses
- death as a symbol of transformation
When you create a card based on an archetype, you are not only working with a personal experience but with an energy that many people recognize.

Exercise: Letting an archetypal card emerge
If you want to explore which archetype is currently at play in your life, you can try the following.
First, take some time to reflect on which force, role, or energy wants to reveal itself in you at this moment. Perhaps you feel you need protection, or courage, gentleness, or transformation.
Then, find images that represent this energy for you and create a SoulCollage card from them. You don't need to know exactly which archetype it is; let the image speak.
Afterward, read the card with the "I am one who..." process.
What quality reveals itself? What does this force want to bring you? To what does it invite you?
You often notice that such a card adds another dimension to your deck because it feels not only personal but also universal.
Archetypes as a source of wisdom
Archetypal cards can help you place your own experiences in a larger perspective. They remind you that what you are going through is often part of a broader human movement of growth, loss, change, and development.
By working with archetypes, you open the door to a deeper layer of meaning in your SoulCollage process.
